Exhibition • Visions of the Future in Japanese Animated Films
Switzerland – Cartoonmuseum Basel – 8.6.2013 – 13.10.2013
Original drawings by the most important illustrators and directors of Japanese animation films are shown for the first time in Switzerland in the exhibition «Proto Anime Cut». The action-packed stories of heroism characteristic for the Japanese anime take place in impressive and vividly constructed science-fiction universes. A look behind the scenes of the creative process reveals the filmmakers to be architectural dreamers, operating at the edges of believability, fiction, and utopia. At the centre of the exhibition is the development of these creative spaces where the action takes place. A large number of background drawings, storyboards, sketches, sources of inspiration, and film excerpts provide insight into the way the most influential animation artists of the last two decades work. In addition, there will be a supporting programme of various guided tours, workshops and artist talks.
